Maureen D. Mayes, MD, MPH
Dr. Mayes is a professor of medicine at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston, where she sees patients in the Scleroderma Clinic, conducts research, and helps to teach young doctors. Her research includes clinical treatment trials for scleroderma, as well as research into genetic factors that influence disease susceptibility and expression. She is the principal investigator for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), sponsored study entitled "The Scleroderma Family Registry and DNA Repository."
She has been involved in scleroderma research since 1981 and has published over 60 articles in this field. In addition, she is the author of The Scleroderma Book: A Guide for Patients and Families, published by Oxford University Press.
